town. ktvu channel 2 morning news continues. good morning, to you. welcome to a brand new day it's monday, april 8th i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm partly cloudy -- i'm tori campbell. pam cook has the day off. tara moriarty is live on 48th and geary in san francisco. that is where a huge tree has fallen. good morning, tara. >> reporter: it is quite a sight. we are here in ocean beach where the winds are about 50 miles an hour down below. we're up on an a cliff right here where we are. around 1:00 and 2:00 this morning those wind governments reached 75 miles an hour. you can see the after effects it had. the giant young lip testee. it will be hours before crews are able to clear this out.

they will have too bring in the woodchip and break this tree apart limb by limb. the wind has blown the sand in drifts all over the great highway. officials have shut down the highway from geary to skyline which is pretty rare. we spoke to one officer on duty who says his car is filled with sand. we saw a few cars getting stuck in the sand. their wheels spinning. so really dangerous to drive in these conditions. >> trees down. the sand is take over the street. >> reporter: have you ever seen anything like this? >> not me. [ laughter ] i've been here eight years now. so yeah. that is about the baddest i've seen it. >> reporter: now in the amazon neighborhood on mission and j knee virginia -- geneva.

you will need a firm grip on that steering wheel as you make your way across. we will be roaming around this morning and let you know what other mayhem we find. as for this tree the good new it's not on gearly which is -- geary which is a major thorough fare through san francisco. we will check in with steve paulson to find out more about those wind gusts a and when they will be dying down. we have gusts on the coast. along the coast. some of the higher elevations still whipping up. some locations not that bad. sfo will be between 25-50 miles an hour. most locations are in the 20s.

half-moon bay and flirting within 30-35-50. some of the gusts will continue to be rather blustery. most locations are in on the breeze or the wind. some areas really early this morning had strong winds. sunny today though. it will be highs 60 to near 70s. here is sal. traffic is moving well on the golden gate bridge but all of the bridges will be experiencing gusty winds. you are driving through you need to give yourself extra time. a little bit of caution on the bay bridge as well. the backup at the toll plaza has not filled in quite yet. let's go back to the desk. high winds have knocked out power to thousands in the bay area. 20,000 customers are without power on the peninsula. more than 2300 without power in the north bay. 1200 have lost power in the south bay. and 900 are without power in the east bay. 150 have also lost power in san francisco. these updated numbers from pg&e. and the powerful winds are also causing trouble everywhere you

look in the bay area. this video came from plant hill into the -- pleasant hill into the channel 2 newsroom a short time ago. they brought down a big tree. crushing a pickup truck. two other cars were also damaged but fortunately there are no reports of injuries. we would like to see your weather pictures just send them to photos@ktvu.com or you can up load them to our facebook page. over night news there is an investigator in sunnyvale that is being called to the scene of a fire that may be linked to a possible explosion. this happened about 3:30 this morning right there on angel avenue. very huge, very intense flames broke out in the garage behind a house. the high winds helped fire that spread to a due flex. the owner of the duplex told ktvu they heard an explosion in their neighbors garage and rushed to wake up his family. two families were evacuated. luckily no one was hurt. in san francisco police are out there searching for a

gunman behind an attempted robbery at a donut shop just hours ago. police say the gunman fired a shot at the happy donut store on bay shore boulevard. the owner of the store was shot. at some point during the altercation, that gunman was stabbed. that gunman is still on the loose. police are looking for him. the owner of the gunman shop is expected to survive. he is continuing his push for gun -- coming up at 65 we'llty yo what is in the new legislation and being left out. it's 6:06. new this morning south korea is backing off a statement that north korea may be planning more nuclear testing. a top south korean official had said there were indications that the north may be preparing to conduct its fourth nuclear test. he now says there are no

unusual signs of a nuclear test right few. the south clarified the official meant north korea has been continuously preparing. you can now buy a power ball lottery ticket here in california. the first tickets went on sale just a few minutes ago. california is the 43rd state to join the power ballotly. the power ball jackpots are bigger than mega millions. just last month a ticket before $338 million. as of today the power ball jackpot is $60 million and the next drawing is wednesday night. time now 6:07. people will need a coat this morning. i mean windy, and cold as soon as you open the door. sal, your morning drives on the

bridges too. >> yeah. it's one of the most dangerous places to drive when it's windy. you pretty much already know that. let's take a look at the commutes including all the bridges going to be windy out there. the bay bridge traffic is moderately heavy. on the span itself will be gusty out there. there are no major problems on 237. there was an accident reported westbound at first street. highway 84 and 35 it was actually not power lines but some sort of other utility lines are down on the road. but highway 84 is still closed at skyline until they clear that up. 6:08 let's go to steve. sal, thank you. sunshine, breezy to windy to very windy. the last couple of hours things have been coming down. winds have really tailed off. it will still be blustery and windy. higher elevations midweek sunny

to warm. a cooler weekend though. maybe run sunday. maybe our forecast models are backing off. wind advisories out. did have gusts 75 miles an hour earlier. offshore buoy. wind gusts 50-54 miles an hour. it's still kicking offshore and some of the lier elevations as we mentioned. overall the low is moving out rapidly. it's moving fast but not before we had 40s on the temps and northwest to a westerly breeze. if we can get a northerly breeze tomorrow temperatures will warm up. 30s in the mountains. we'll have more on that in a second. light snow stillalling over there. we will start to see a pretty little cool down. tonight tomorrow temperatures begin to warm up. but today it looks like a

breezy, blustery day. sunny and wind any be chilly to mild. some of the areas could be on the cool side. i think tomorrow everybody will get in the warm up. same for wednesday. a cooler pattern by the weekend. we had rain over night here. the wind has been the big story but the citier has been getting snow since last night. brian is joining us. it doesn't look too bad there. >> no it's very nice. and as you can see we've got a couple inches of snow here at the 500-foot level and expecting 6-8 at the summit. it's a powder day on the mountain. here is video from earlier this morning. this is video from the shell

station. just above 5,000 feet we saw snow tape you are off there. conditions in fact improving with broken clouds. i did talk to one driver that was trying to get back to marin and had a pretty tough go. >> a little treacherous. a lot of black ice. >> and back out here live you can see a beautiful site this morning. we thought we were done after nice warm temperatures down in the valley. if you have the day off or take the day off do a little powder skiing here in the spring. >> i was looking at tahoe and mammoth and truckee there is not much of a breeze. will you verify that? >> yeah. as we passed through auburn we had gusty winds.

s is 6:14 new this morning former british prime minister moore great thatcher died. she was not only the first female prime minister but the longest serving. she served three consecutive terms. she was also nope for her strong partnership with u.s. president ronald reagan. she had been in fragile health for a decade. she was 87 years old. time now 6:15. in chicago hundreds plan to attend a funeral service for beloved movie critic robert ebert. he was 70 years old when he died last wear after a ten year battle with cancer. another female is planned on

april 11th. a trial back in california about warning labels on baby food saying it contains lead starts today. they are selling product with low levels of lead in the food. the fda tested the baby food in the lawsuit and determined levels are below the standards. as president obama heads to connecticut to draw up support for his gun stay city proposals today several senators are working on a new plan. kyla campbell is in our washington, d.c. newsroom. good morning, kyla. >> reporter: this plan is still in the works. but the focus is on how far background checks should go. two senators one republican and one democrat are working to expand background checks to include online gun sales and a purchase at gun shows but they are likely to exclude sales

between relatives and temporary transfers for hunters and sportsman. when president obama speaks in connecticut today he will likely push background checks for all private sales. high capacity magazine limit and an assault weapons ban. but support has been watered down for his proposals. senate majority leader harry bill says any assault would likely be separate from a vote on background checks. congress gets back from a two week recess today. members are expected to to debate these when i see you next. 6:17. wikileaks is announcing kiss anger cables. 7.7million diplomatic information. many of the reports were written by him or sent to him.

wikileaks founder julian assange said he organized his collection during his time in the embassy. secretary of state john kerry is in israel trying to restart mideast peace talks. kerry met with mahmoud ray bays. he is trying to end a four-year stale meat between israelis and palestinians. time now 6:1. the san francisco international airport is welcoming the arrival of scandinavian airlines new flight. the flight will arrive later today. the schedule arrival is 2:45 this afternoon but the actual time the plane lands it depends on our weather. the our port division of the san francisco fire department will perform a water cannon salute celebrating the

occasion. sfo wants all of the ride sharing companies to follow the lead of cabs and limo companies and be certified by the state puc. the airport has demanded ride sharing companies quit their sfo operations until the dispute is all settled down. some ride sharing say they will get the permits but others are openingly defying it. >> i wonder if they all have that pink mustache on the front of the car. 6:19. let's check in with sal who is taking a look in san francisco. how are things looking? >> it's looking good. in case you are just joining us the winds have done a number on roads. trees have come down. utility lines have come down. let's take a look at what we have now in san francisco freeways. northbound 101 the traffic there looks pretty good as you drive up to the 80 split. southbound 101 as well. if you drive on bridges and causeways, you need to give yourself extra time. also the great highway is closed or should be closed

soon. we'll talk to tara about that. but it's bad driving on the great highway. westbound bay bridge is slow and also we have highway 84 closed at 35 according to chp because of utility lines came down there. 6:19 let's go to steve. very good morning. maybe you heard the rain last night. we had a little bit. the system left some snow in the sierra. it's accelerating rapidly and high pressure behind it doesn't like it. it looks like in the last couple of hours things have been coming down. some locations there is hardly any breeze at all. there is our low right there. but i will tell you it's moving fast. it's cooking right along. it will be out of the picture fast. high pressure builds in. we are getting a no doubt northwest breeze. temperatures would be even cooler if it wasn't for the breeze holding temperatures up. i think tonight with clearing skies we will see 30s tomorrow

morning. winds have been west, northwest. but up to 50 miles an hour there. also some of the offshore buoys as well. 38 eureka. that is a really cool aromas in place. temperatures will start to warm up. pattern changes in place. after today. and then things calm down and temperatures warm up. especially through about wednesday. and also thursday. clouds are out. it should be sunny and sparkling today. chilly to mild with very tricky temps. 60s to 70s. some are mid 70s. santa rosa usually the benefit to get that north wind. we will go with a lot of 60s today. 70s and 80s tuesday and wednesday into thursday. 6:21. construction growth in the bay area and beyond is attracting thousands of workers. the san francisco chronicle reports construction workers are coming here from colorado, texas, washington, and nevada. all to get jobs. the state employment development department says

california has added 53,000 construction jobs over the past two years. and more people are ditching cable in favor of watching shows and movies on the internet or their cell phones. a new report says there are five million households without tvs which is up from two million in 2007. as a result tv rating company nielsen is changing the way it tracks its data base to include broad band usage. big changes for the community college students this summer. why some classes may be easier to sign up for. also cal's women kept march madness alive. what happened in last nights historic final four game. beat cal 64-57. the bears had made it to the final four for the first time in the school's history. the louisville women will now face connecticut for the national championship and again that is tomorrow night. time now 6:25. there is a bright spot for hundreds of college students in the bay area you want to sign up for summer classes after budgets and classes were slashed almost 60%. the voter approved property 30 is making it so many bay area colleges can bring back the summer classes. registration in many schools actually began this month. chabot college is adding 50 more classes than they had last summer. glimpse time is 6:26. let's get you moving this morning. sal, you've been busy from the time you walked in the door. i saw you. >> that is right. it's been a busy day with the winds and the traffic out there. let's take a look at what we have now with the south bay.

not a lot of major road problems here. the traffic on the sunol grade there was a stalled truck. some busy traffic heading south. let's go to steve. we have a wind advisory out. clearing to the north. there is still clouds going by with this system. but they will be out of here and it will be sunny and clear and nice today. it will be breezy to windy at times. highs 50s to a few 70s. time now 6:27. high winds in the south bay fanned some damaging flames. we are at the scene of a wind whipped fire that drove two families out into the streets. and strong winds creating a rough ride for commuters this morning on some of the bay area bridges. and also causing a lots of damage all across the bay area. we'll tell you about the down streets and the power outages.

and causing power outages. alex savidge is joining us in it'ser city. what kind of problems to they have there? >> reporter: the winds are letting up a bit where we are right now. still the warning is out for drivers. it will be a rough ride. you can see the sign here at the san mateo bridge. we just came across the bridge. our truck was getting blown around quite a bit. there was a high wind advisory in place on all the major bridges around the bay area this morning. the strong gusts have also caused a lot of damage. in san leandro a large branch came crashing down on top of a car. it also took down power lines and that triggered a small outage. that was on the 900 block of joaquin avenue. no one though was hurt there. meantime in pleasant hill a large tree was blown down on top of a pickup truck. and again no one injured in that situation either. now here on the peninsula this morning, a lot of people are waking up in the dark. we checked in with pg&e this

morning. they said roughly 20,000 people on the peninsula are without power. what we are doing we are on the way to portola valley. the reports of downed power lines on highway 84. we will head that direction and check out the situation. we'll have an update later on mornings on 2. for right now we want to take it over to steve paulson. over night they were 65-70 miles an hour. so maybely along the coast some of the higher elevations. sfo had gusts to 50. alex is right if things are not calming down, still around 25- 45 miles an hour. i expect these each hour they keep coming down on the hourslies and that makes sense. some locations really not in on this. there is not much of a breeze but others still blustery to windy. here is sal. good morning. we are looking at gusty winds as you mentioned all over the place. that will effect your morning commute. especially if you drive on bay

area bridges. let's take a look at the commute here if you are are driving to work. if you're taking a flight out of sfo i guess that is a commute. you may want to check the status of that flight. airport officials say the delays due to winds are impossible. wind is also expected to result in changes in the runway configuration causing planes to take off and land on different runways. strong and gusty winds expected at the airport until about at least 5:00 this afternoon. again check with your carrier. let's go back to the desk. we have been asking ktvu viewers all of you send us photos of any wind damage you see. this was sent to us this morning. he says of the branch you see there broke off a tree and hit his truck. if you have weather photos we want to see them. just send them to photos at@ktvu.com. or up load them to our facebook personal injury. we are following developing news out of san francisco where police are investigating a

suspicious death. police say a man's body was discovered at a high-rise on vallejo street just before 10:00 last night. homicide detectives are trying to figure out how the man died but police do say the circumstances are suspicious. anyone with information is asked to call san francisco police. developing news firefighters say high winds caused a sunnyvale fire to spread from one building to another. ktvu channel 2 reporter christien kafton has been covering this fire live since 4:30 this morning. he joins us with more information. good morning, christien. >> reporter: good morning. sunnyvale fire has scaled back their activities here because the fire appears to be out right now. we are really on stand by to make sure it doesn't reignite. we are getting our first look as the sun is coming up. you can see that burned out garage back in that area. firefighters say they will be talking with residents of the home to see if they stored any

flammable liquids in that garage. >> that will be part of the investigation. we have a fire investigator who will talk to the homeowner to determine what sort of activity he does in the garage. and try to determine that. but right now i don't have any further information. >> reporter: we were on scene at 4:10 this morning and watched as the winds whipped the flames. neighbors living in that duplex tell us they caught fire tell us they were awakened by what sounded like an explosion. >> we were sleeping inside in the duplex and all of a sudden there was an explosion and bright light in the bedroom. and we looked outside the window and the garage of our neighbor had exploded. >> reporter: firefighters have told us despite the early hour and the fact that people were living in all three of the homes involved, no one was injured and everyone is accounted for.

right now again you take a look at our live video you can see the firefighters beginning to pack up their gear. they have been on stand by because the winds played a factor in this. at this point the residence and firefighters on stand by waiting for a fire investigators to get to the bottom of this. we are live in sunnyvale christien kafton ktvu channel 2:think -- channel 2 news. investigators investigating alabama early morning shooting at -- investigating an early morning shoots at a donut shop. brian. >> reporter: dave, they left about a short time ago. as you can see behind me here at the happy donut it is business as usual but that certainly was not the case. heavy police activity about 3.5 hours ago as there was an attempted robbery, stabbing, and shooting here. police asat 3:00 this morning a

male suspect entered the donut shop and tried to rob the owner. instead the owner backing down we understand he got into confrontation with the robber and stabbed the suspect. i just spoke with the wife of the donut shop owner. she tells me she opened the door at 3:00 a.m.. then a man about 5'8" or 5'9" in height wearing all black pulled a gun out, put it to her head and demanded money. instead of backing down the donut shop owner grabbed a knife and stabbed the suspect. there was some type of yelling and physical confrontation that led to the front of the store. that is when the suspect fired at least three shots. according to the wife her husband was shot three times. at least once on his arm and near her ribs. he was taken to san francisco general hospital where he was treated and he is expected to be okay. the bad news though is that the suspect remains on the loose after he fled the donut shop on foot and at this point police have not officially released any suspects description.

back out here live according to the employees the robbery suspect didn't get away with anything but they are a little shaken up. if you saw or heard anything, you urged to call san francisco police. we are live in san francisco i'm brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. right now contra costa county authorities are looking for a missing inmate. he went missing around 3:00 this morning in clayton. that is located in a very rural area. right now the authorities are searching both in and outside of that facility. we have not yet received a description of that inmate. your time is 6:38. let's check back with sal. you're watching the entire bay area. how is the east bay holding up? >> it's windy everywhere. the east bay we have a lot of roads the people have been saying it's pretty gusty. it's gusty over the willow pass grade. on the east shore. you get the idea. it will be gusty out there. you can just tell by looking at

our pictures. it will be normal traffic though. a lot of people spring break is over and more people are coming on the roads. bay bridge toll plaza that is a moderate delay. it's 25 minutes or less than that as you make it on the span. and remember it's windy on the span. we talked about the altamont pass. we have slow traffic coming in from the altamont pass. scene slowing from hayward to fremont as you head south. i want to remind you highway 84 is still closed in the area there because of power line situation. so give yourself plenty of extra time. 6:39 let's go back to steve. thank you, sal. breezy for some. not too bad for others. strongest gusts look like between 1:00 and 4:00 in the morning. now it's a fresh breeze for some. it will be a day where we have rather strong gusts. interesting pattern. we had rain last night by the way. and then we'll go to sunshine and warmer temps. you sitting down? probably mid 80s by the time we get to wednesday. yes, that is right, dave.

then we will kyle it down by the weekend -- then we will cool it down by the weekend. we can transition now and go to the computer models. wind advisories out for the entire bay area. the strongest gusts were ry ear we're still getting some about 25-40 miles an hour. some of the offshore buoys. some of the wave sets were up to 20 feet. so the strongest gust again inland are coming down a little bit. the source of the culprit was a strong low. compact one but high pressure is building into the north. 40s on the temps. they could be a lot colder than this. the wind is predominantly to the west, or northwest. it's really tricky forecast highs today. i saw just one location. i saw four observations.

good morning, to you. here's a quick look at some of the top stories we are following for you at 6:44. very windy conditions blamed for this. this fire it pushed from a burning detached garage over to a duplex. just hours ago. two families were evacuated. and an investigator will figure out what caused that fire. in san francisco a donut shop owner was shot. his attacker was stabbed just hours ago as they were fighting. this happened at happy donuts on bay shore boulevard. police say the gunman is still on the loose right now. the owner of the donut shop is expected to survive. later today president obama goes to connecticut. he will continue his push for gun control legislation. the bipartisan senate a gang of eight they will release their proposed legislation sometime this week. it is 6:45. president obama is scheduled to releases his proposed 2014 budget plan on wednesday. the president's budget includes new spending for public works

projects. early education and job training. it also has $580 billion in new taxes. something republicans strongly oppose. to show he's willing to compromise, the president is also proposing a cut in social security payments. and as congress gets back to work today after a two week recess, immigration reform is high on the agenda. the bipartisan gang of eight senators are expected to release their proposed legislation sometime this week. reportedly it will include a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million people currently living in the u.s. illegally. it will also lay out guidelines for a guest worker program and plans for securing the border. time is 6:46. it was another deadly attack in afghanistan this morning. a roadside bomb killed nine people and wounded 22 others on a puck lick bus. the past couple of days have been very violent in afghanistan. on saturday 20 people including

11 children they were killed in a nato air strike targeting militants. that air strike came on the very same day that six americans died in an attack on a military convoy in another part of afghanistan. 25-year-old diplomat ann was among the dead. she is believed to be the first american diplomat killed since last september's attack. she died in a suicide bombing attack while delivering books to school kids. >> i think she really enjoyed the challenge, she really enjoyed the opportunity to work with the local people in the community. >> secretary of state john kerry has condemned the attack. he called her death a brim reminder just how important and how risky the work is in afghanistan. happening right now high winds causing a mess on bay area roads. ktvu channel 2 reporter tara

moriarty is live in san francisco with information on how long the wind advisory could last and the big cleanup. >> reporter: good morning. this is quite a picture here. it's a pretty amazing sight. a giant young lip testee. it will be hours before crews are able to clear this out. they will have to bring in the woodchipper. we just spoke to an officer who said there are trees down all over the city this morning. so a very busy one out here indeed. the wind has blown the sand in drifts all over the great highway. between 1:00 and 2:00 this morning we saw wind gusts up to 75 miles an hour from ocean beach to daly city. so officials have shut down the great highway from lincoln to skyline. they just reopened the stretch from fulton to point lobose which is where we are right now. just past the cliff house.

we saw a few cars earlier getting stuck in the sand. so for dangerous driving conditions. >> we went through a couple of big sand dunes when we were going about 40 miles an hour. and set off the alarm. my knee hit the key and the car alarm was buzzing. it was pretty exciting. but yeah. sand all over the place. >> reporter: now in the amazon neighborhood on mission and geneva high winds knocked over trash bins spilling garbage everywhere. this will be similar for many areas for those effected by the garbage strike. we will take a live look at the san mateo bridge. all bay area bridges under a high wind advisory. you will need a firm grip on the steering wheel as you make your way across the richmond san rafael, carquinez, and golden gate. high profile vehicles are not recommended. and back here live, the wind has died down for now but it is

expected to pick up again. those high winds should be lasting until dusk. so definitely want to make sure that you take your time this morning as you know sometimes when you drive along you can feel the wind blow the car in the other lane. right now we will check in with sal castaneda and find out what is going on on the bay area roadways. hey there sal. it will be a tough drive in many areas. it will be windy across the bay area bridges. that is definitely the case on causeways. let's go to the south bay and take a look at 280 northbound. you will see traffic moves along relatively well there. no major problems coming through but it is a little bit crowded. a lot of people are back from spring break. i think you will see more traffic this week. out from the livermore valley to castro valley the heaviest traffic is on 580. it is pretty slow coming through and also very slow on 680 southbound leaving pleasanton down to sunol grade.
